This stage leads pilgrims on the St. James Trail directly into the City of Salzburg. The expansive views from the pilgrimage basilica of Maria Plain give you a taste of this city’s proud past.
From Eugendorf, you mainly follow cart paths and side roads through Hallwang and on towards Salzburg. The trail takes you over the Plainberg, on top of which we find the pilgrimage church of Maria Plain, representing the highest point of this stage. An inviting spot to enjoy a well-earned rest, or to savor some moments of silent introspection. The walk up and down is via the Mt. Calvary pathway, which underwent a complete upgrade in 2005. The trail continues to the banks of the Salzach, along which you walk upriver. And your heart will soon leap in anticipation: for quickly revealing itself before you is one of the most beautiful views imaginable of Salzburg City, with its some 200 Baroque buildings. If you wish to do something good for yourself and are looking for some healthy nutrition, continue straight to University Square, where fresh produce from Salzburg’s farmers is sold daily at the Grünmarkt.
Tip for Cyclists:
The entire route of this stage of the St. James Trail can also be ridden by bike.
